Shadow Work & Spiritual Bypassing: Why the Harder Path Is the Healthier One

By Robyn Ellis (Inspired Robyn Healer)

It’s a Tuesday morning, and I’m sitting here with a cup of tea, feeling the tug of something subtle yet persistent: a sense that I’ve been out of alignment.
The series of podcasts I’ve recently recorded, especially today’s episode, have been all about this: how we know we’re energetically off, how we often try to skip the discomfort with spiritual practise alone — and why that “skip” is often what keeps us stuck.

If you’ve ever found yourself saying “I’m just going to love and light this away,” or “I’ll meditate it, I’ll journal it, I’ll do the breath-work” yet the same patterns keep showing up — then this post is for you.

What Is Shadow Work?

In simple terms, shadow work is the process of exploring and integrating the parts of ourselves we deny or hide — the fears, the shame, the negative emotions, but also the un-lived desires, the unloved strengths. According to modern healing literature:

“Your shadow is essentially the denied aspects of your self: the parts of yourself that you do not accept.” Becoming Fully Human
Launching us into true self-knowledge and deeper authenticity.

In my own healing journey — living 18 years with MS, showing up for energy healing sessions, doing the work with therapists and mentors — I’ve learned that the invitation to shadow work is constant. Even now, as I write this, I feel the resistance, the wobble, the little voice saying “Not now. Maybe tomorrow.”

What Is Spiritual Bypassing?

Here’s the thing: spiritual practise is beautiful. Meditation, breath-work, affirmations — yes, all of it. But when we use these tools only to escape or avoid what’s really going on underneath, we step into the territory of spiritual bypassing.

“Spiritual bypassing … is the use of spiritual beliefs and practices to avoid dealing with unresolved emotional issues, psychological wounds and human experiences.” spiritualseek.com+1

Here’s how you might spot it in yourself or others:

  • You feel “fine” on the surface, but something still aches.

  • You keep repeating “All love and light” yet anger, resentment or shame keeps popping up anyway.

  • You dive into spiritual content, retreats, other people’s journeys — but your own emotional pain stays locked.

  • You believe “I shouldn’t feel this” because you’re spiritual, so you push the feeling down and keep going.

How They Show Up Together: Shadow Work vs Spiritual Bypassing

When you’re out of alignment, shadow work and spiritual bypassing often intertwine. You try really hard to do everything else except look at the thing that’s calling you to heal.

Here’s a pattern I know well:

  1. You feel something off: procrastination, physical fatigue, avoidance.

  2. You throw yourself into spiritual practise — books, meditations, healing sprays, even group sessions.

  3. You still feel the inner ache; something keeps showing up.

  4. You realise the pattern repeats.

  5. You begin to see that the how you’re approaching things may be misaligned.

In Episode 6 I talked about how I injured myself gardening, how I felt my body scream “slow down” — and how that wake-up call was really a call to realign my approach. Not to stop healing, but to heal in a way that honours both the shadow and the light. In this episode I mention how I’ve looked back at my past to see the repeating message!

Why Doing the Real Inner Work Matters

Choosing to face your shadow doesn’t mean you’ll never feel love and light or joy again. It means you’ll choose them from a place of wholeness, not avoidance.

  • When you integrate your shadow, your presence becomes more grounded, your energy more sustainable.

  • When you avoid your shadow through bypassing, you may feel lighter for a moment — but the underlying wounding will show up again.

  • If you’ve been dealing with a chronic condition, high sensitivity, or constantly giving to others — you know this on a cellular level. Your body, mind, and spirit may be whispering that something needs attention.

How to Start (Gentle & Grounded)

Here are some gentle invitations for you:

  • Notice the signs. Procrastination, avoidance, fatigue, body-aches, “I’ll do that later” — these are your align-alerts.

  • Journal the question: “What is being avoided under the guise of self-care?”

  • Integrate practise + presence. Don’t just escape into spiritual routines — ask your body, your emotions, your energy “What needs my attention now?”

  • Find safe container. Whether it’s one-on-one mentorship, a healing session, or a trusted group — someone hearing you, guiding you, holding you matters.

  • Be kind to yourself. The healing path isn’t about perfection. It’s about more compassion, more awareness, more aliveness.
